Use of private Mac OS X computers in the CBS courses

Students are welcome to bring their own computers; the requirements are as follows:

Hardware

  • Wireless LAN card, 802.11b standard (Any newer Mac has that)

Software

  • X11 is required - it is pre-installed on Leopard (10.5) and found on the installation disk for Tiger (10.4).
  • While not required, it may be nice to have R installed locally on your Mac.
    You may download and install R from here (R-2.6.1.dmg, Dec. 2007)
    When installed you may want to add some BioConductor libraries. This can be done by typing
    source("http://bioconductor.org/biocLite.R")
    biocLite()

    in the R command prompt.

It is essential that you test your computer setup in good time. Both the wireless connection and the necessary software need to be operational before the exercise.
Note that portable Windows computers will be available to the students when attending a course involving computer exercises - roughly one computer per two students.
